What Is a Broadband Service?

Broadband commonly refers a technology that gives you round-the-clock, high-speed internet access. Some of the common mediums of high-speed data transmission include fibre optic cables, coaxial cables, and radio waves.

Types of Broadband Connections

Common types of broadbands are listed below:

  • Cable modem

This type of broadband connection enables you to access high-speed internet with the same type of cables that are used for your television. Transmission speed of cable modem broadband connection is usually 1.5 Mbps or higher.

  • Fibre

The fibre optic technology enables the transmission of data through transparent glass fibres at speeds far greater than DSL or cable modem; typical speeds of fibre broadband ranges from tens to hundreds of Mbps. While traditional copper cables use electrical signals to transmit data, this type of broadband connection carries data in the form of light.

  • Wireless

As the name suggest, a wireless broadband connection does not use wires to connect to the internet. These types of broadband connect a home or office to high-speed internet using a radio link between the home or office and the service provider’s facility. Also, multiple individuals can connect to the internet with a wireless connection.

  • Satellite

Similar to wireless broadband, satellite broadband is another great option to connect to high-speed internet, especially in the rural areas. Network connectivity is provided by geostationary or low-earth-orbit satellites instead of cables. On earth’s surface, a satellite dish typically affixed to a roof, receives the signals through radio waves. Therefore, this type of broadband is prone to disruptions due to extreme weather.

  • Broadband over powerlines (BPL)

By using the existing low- and medium-voltage electric power distribution network, BPL service providers deliver high-speed internet to you. Although available in limited areas, it has a significant potential as the power lines are already installed and there is no need to build new facilities for each customer.

  • Digital subscriber line (DSL)

It is a wireless transmission technology that has a relatively better speed than traditional copper telephone lines. The availability of this type of broadband service depends on the distance from your home or office to the closest DSL facility. Average transmission speed of DSL can range from hundreds of Kbps to millions of bps.
