- How to Protect Yourself from ATM Card Trapping
How to Protect Yourself from ATM Card Trapping?
3 July, 2024
Synopsis
Learning about ATM card trapping and other frauds can help protect your hard earned savings.
Remember to check for red flags whenever you go to make a cash withdrawal at the ATM.
If you feel suspicious, consider using another ATM, preferably a bank ATM, to make transactions.
ATM card trapping poses a significant risk to individuals using ATMs. It involves criminals attaching devices to ATMs to trap Debit or Credit Cards. It allows criminals to retrieve the cards later and use them for fraudulent transactions. This type of fraud can lead to financial losses and personal inconvenience for the victims. In this blog, we will explore five effective ways to protect yourself from ATM card trapping and secure ATM transactions.
ATM Card Trap Prevention: Know the Five Ways You Can Protect Yourself
Here are the key factors to keep in mind:
1. Understand the Fraud
ATM card trapping is employed by criminals to steal individuals' banking information and access their funds. This method involves installing trapping devices onto or inside ATM card slots. These devices are designed to capture the inserted card, preventing it from being ejected properly. Once the card is trapped, unsuspecting users may leave, assuming the ATM is malfunctioning, while their card has been compromised. Scammers may then retrieve the trapped cards later to clone them or use the stolen information for fraudulent activities.
2. What Are the Common Signs of ATM Card Trapping
Resistance When Using ATM: Unusual resistance when inserting or removing a card from the ATM might indicate a trapping device is obstructing the card slot.
Unexplained Card Retention: If the ATM retains a card without completing the transaction or displaying an error message, it is a red flag.
Visible Tampering or Damage: Signs of tampering around the card slot or keypad such as scratches, glue residue or loose components, may indicate a trapping device has been installed.
Unusual Surroundings: Individuals loitering nearby or behaving suspiciously might be monitoring the ATM to retrieve trapped cards.
3. Follow Safe Practices Before Using the ATM
Opt for ATMs located in well-lit, busy areas with high foot traffic. Avoid secluded or poorly lit locations where criminals may have more opportunities to tamper with machines.
Before inserting your card, visually inspect the ATM for any signs of tampering or suspicious devices.
Be aware of your surroundings. If something feels off or suspicious, find another ATM to avoid ATM card theft.
4. Be Alert While Using the ATM
Shield the keypad with your hand or body while entering your PIN. This prevents hidden cameras or onlookers from capturing your PIN.
Have your card ready before approaching the ATM to minimise the time spent at the machine.
After completing your transaction, take a moment to observe your surroundings and ensure you are not being watched by suspicious individuals.
5. What to Do if Your Card is Trapped
If you realise that your card is trapped inside the ATM, avoid entering your PIN again and try to remain calm.
Resist the urge to abandon the ATM immediately. Leaving the scene could make it difficult to protect your Debit Card later and may increase the risk of unauthorised access to your account.
Use your mobile phone or another nearby phone to contact your bank's emergency helpline. Inform them about the situation.
Stay Alert to Safeguard Your ATM Transactions
Following the tips mentioned above, you can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to this type of fraud. Always be aware of your surroundings, cover your PIN and regularly monitor your bank statements for any unauthorised activity. Stay informed and take proactive measures to safeguard your financial information and hard-earned money.
