FASTag Scanner: How Does It Work?

FASTag Scanner: How Does It Work?

13 October, 2023

The FASTag scanner is an electronic device that facilitates cashless transactions on toll plazas. It scans the FASTag stickers affixed on the vehicle’s windshield by utilising Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. It is a crucial component of the FASTag system, enabling seamless cashless transactions at toll plazas and reducing traffic congestion.

The FASTag system was introduced to streamline and enhance the efficiency of toll collection on the Indian highway network. FASTag is a part of the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) payment system that has now become an indispensable component of India’s transportation infrastructure. In 2021, the Government of India made FASTags mandatory for all vehicles passing through national highways. This provision came as a part of the government’s vision to promote digital payments, reduce traffic congestion, and encourage a greener ecosystem.

What is a FASTag scanner?

A FASTag scanner is an electronic device installed at toll plazas. It employs advanced Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system to scan the RFID-enabled tags affixed on vehicles’ windshields. It allows automatic identification and contactless toll collection at designated toll plazas.

How does the FASTag scanner work?

FASTag scanner has prevented travellers from experiencing the inconvenience of cash payments and waiting in long queues at toll plazas. Its working mechanism involves a seamless integration of hardware and software components. That includes:

  • RFID technology

Each FASTag contains a small RFID chip that stores essential information about the vehicle, such as registration details, class of vehicle and the prepaid account number linked to it.

  • Toll plaza infrastructure

Every toll plaza is equipped with FASTag scanners installed above the roadway. When a FASTag-affixed vehicle approaches the toll booth, the RFID chip in the FASTag comes into the scanner’s range.

  • Issuer bank

The bank is responsible for providing RFID-enabled unique identification numbers. The issuer bank facilitates customers’ prepaid accounts for amount deductions on toll plazas.

Here is a step-by-step process of how a FASTag barcode scanner works:

  • Step 1: When a vehicle equipped with RFID-enabled FASTag approaches the NETC lane of the toll plaza, the FASTag scanner captures the FASTag details such as Tag ID, TID, Vehicle class, etc., and processes the data in real-time and sends it to the acquiring bank.

  • Step 2: The bank then sends a verification request to the NETC Mapper to validate the tag details.

  • Step 3: Upon tag validation, NETC Mapper responds to the received tag details. During validation, if the Tag ID is absent in NETC Mapper, it responds that the tag is invalid or else proceeds to the next step.

  • Step 4: After successful validation, the appropriate toll fare is calculated to initiate the debit request in the NETC system.

  • Step 5: The NETC system forwards the debit request to the respective issuer bank to proceed with the amount deduction request from the customer’s prepaid account.

  • Step 6: The amount is debited from the FASTag holder’s account, and an SMS alert is sent to the tag holder. A response is sent to the NETC system after successfully completing the debit request.

  • Step 7: The NETC system then responds to the toll plaza system to complete the process.

FASTag user experience

FASTag has significantly enhanced the user experience for commuters and commercial vehicles. It gives you a seamless and contactless toll payment experience. Whether you are a daily commuter or an occasional traveller, it enhances your overall experience. Here are some of the key benefits:

  • Reduced traffic congestion

With FASTag barcode scanner facilitating smooth and contactless transactions, toll plazas can experience reduced congestion and ensure minimal waiting time for the drivers. This not only saves time but also results in fuel consumption and lower emissions, promoting a greener environment.

  • Enhanced convenience

As FASTag eliminated the need to interact with toll booth operators, travellers enjoy the convenience of hassle-free toll payments. The automated process makes FASTag users’ journeys more convenient and enjoyable.

  • Digital account management

FASTag users can access their account details including, account balance, transaction history and recharge, online through various digital payment platforms or banking portals. This feature empowers users to stay in control of their toll expenses.

  • Integration with National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) platform

The seamless integration of the FASTag system with the NETC platform enables cashless transactions at toll plazas. The NETC platform acts as a central repository of toll transactions and ensures interoperability among different toll operators and banks.

  • Multi-modal integration

The NETC platform promotes multi-modal interoperability, enabling FASTag users to pay tolls across national highways and state borders, using a single RFID-based tag. The integration simplifies inter-state travel and encourages the adoption of electronic toll collection nationwide.

  • Banking and mobile wallet partnerships

In order to facilitate easy account management and recharge options, the NETC platform collaborates with numerous banks and digital wallet providers. This extensive network ensures complete accessibility to FASTag services for users.

  • Streamlined toll collection

With NETC’s FASTag deployment, toll collection operations have become more efficient. The seamless process eliminates the need for manual cash transactions and improves traffic flow.
