- 9 FASTag Rules effective from 1st August 2024
9 FASTag Rules effective from 1st August 2024
27 August, 2024
Synopsis
FASTag helps streamline toll payments and reduce congestion.
It is important to stay updated with NPCI’s new rules for FASTag for a smooth journey.
Some new FASTag guidelines are – linking of vehicle registration number, linking your phone, and penalty for not using FASTag.
Typically, most people have no issues paying tolls if it means smooth, fast roads that take them to their destinations quickly. What they do mind is waiting in line to pay. In 2016, the government introduced FASTag, which are fixed on vehicle windscreens that allow you to zip through dedicated lanes at toll plazas without stopping. The vehicles are identified using Radio Frequency Identification Technology (RFID) and charges are deducted from the prepaid wallet or Savings account linked to the FASTag.
FASTag has significantly transformed the way we travel on highways. Implemented to streamline toll payments and reduce congestion, FASTag automatically deducts toll charges from the linked prepaid wallet or Savings Account. While the convenience of this system is undeniable, it is essential to be aware of certain rules to ensure smooth and hassle-free journeys. Here are new FASTag rules that every user must know, helping you navigate the highways efficiently and avoid any potential issues or penalties.
FASTag new rules have been introduced, of which all travellers who use these toll roads need to be aware. Let’s take a look.
New FASTag Rules 2024
The new rules for FASTag in 2024 introduce several important requirements to enhance the efficiency, compliance, and user experience of the electronic toll collection system. Here are the new rules:
1. ‘One Vehicle, One Tag’ [OVOT]
As per OVOT mandate, you may no longer have more than one active FASTag linked to your vehicle. In case you have an active tag on your vehicle number, and you apply for another tag, your previous FASTag will be closed. To retain the previous tag, you must contact the issuing bank of your existing FASTag. You can check the complete details of all the FASTags’ issued on your vehicle here.
2. Incorrect / Invalid Vehicle Number
Each FASTag must be linked with the correct vehicle registration number as per the Registration Certificate (RC) issued by the Regional Transport Office (RTO). If your FASTag is issued with an incorrect vehicle number, you can get it corrected by raising a service request for a Vehicle Number update by following the below steps:
Login to HDFC Bank FASTag Customer Portal.
Click on the Service Request tab and under “Make Service Request” select Request Type as “UPDATE VEHICLE REG NO.”.
Select the Chassis / Vehicle No. on which VRN No. needs to be updated.
Enter the vehicle number, upload the RC copy (mandatory), validate the request via OTP and submit.
3. Update Vehicle Registration Number against Chassis No [VIN to VRN]:
If the vehicle registration number is not updated within 90 days from the date of FASTag issuance, your HDFC Bank FASTag will be closed due to non-compliance as per NPCI guidelines.
Each FASTag must be linked with the unique combination of vehicle registration number and chassis number. For new vehicles where the registration number is not yet available, FASTag is issued on the chassis number.
To update the Vehicle Registration Number, please raise a service request on HDFC Bank Customer Portal by following the below steps,
Login to HDFC Bank FASTag Customer Portal.
Click on the Service Request tab and under “Make Service Request”, select Request Type as “UPDATE VEHICLE REG NO.”.
Select the Chassis / Vehicle No. on which VRN No. needs to be updated
Enter the vehicle number, upload the RC copy (mandatory), validate the request via OTP and submit.
4. KYC Update Requirement
FASTag wallets issued between 3 to 5 years ago must have their KYC (Know Your Customer) details updated by 31st October 2024. This measure ensures that all customer information is current and accurate, enhancing the security and reliability of the system.
As per RBI Guidelines for prepaid wallets, the maximum wallet balance allowed is ₹2 Lakh at any point in time for Full KYC wallets. The maximum balance allowed is ₹10,000 for Small Prepaid Payment Instruments (PPIs) or Min. KYC wallets. The amount outstanding at any point in time in such wallets shall not exceed ₹10,000. The validity for Min KYC wallets is 2 years. Post 2 years Wallet will be marked with a credit freeze.
Customers must upgrade to Full KYC to activate their FASTag wallets and avail benefits of increased FASTag wallet Limit of up to ₹2 Lakh.

Documents Required: PAN & Aadhaar Card
5. Replacement of Older FASTags:
FASTags older than 5 years must be replaced with new ones. This ensures that all customers are utilising the latest technology and standards for toll collection.
For tag replacement/re-issuance, please raise a service request on HDFC Bank Customer Portal by following the below steps.
Login to HDFC FASTag Customer Portal: Click here
Click on "Service Request" > Make Service Request > Select Request Type as "Tag Replacement" > Select Vehicle No in dropdown > Click on tick box option & proceed.
Enter your OTP and submit.
Note: Tag Replacement Fee of ₹100 (debited from FASTag Wallet).
6. Uploading Vehicle Images
Users must upload images of their vehicle while applying for new FASTag on the HDFC Bank websit.
The front view with the FASTag affixed. [Clear image with number plate & TAG affixed]
A side view showing the axle.
A clear image of the FASTag.
This visual verification ensures the proper installation and use of the FASTag.
7. Link FASTag to Mobile Number
Each FASTag must be linked to the owner’s mobile number. This linkage ensures proper communication between FASTag providers and users, allowing for timely updates, alerts and notifications.
To update the mobile number on your NETC FASTag Wallet ID, you may call 1800-120-1243 or write to us at fastagsupport@1pay.in
8. Verification with VAHAN Database
The vehicle registration number, chassis number and engine number entered by you during the FASTag application shall be verified with the VAHAN database to ensure the accuracy and validity of the vehicle and owner details. This verification step helps in maintaining a standardised and reliable database across all toll collection points. So, ensure you enter the correct vehicle details during the application.
9. Double Toll Fee
Enhanced monitoring and enforcement systems will be in place to detect and penalise vehicles without valid FASTag or FASTag not pasted on the front windscreen.
Vehicles without a valid FASTag:
Vehicles will be subject to double the toll fee as a penalty without valid FASTag, encouraging compliance.
Non-affixation of FASTag on the front windshield of the vehicle:
Double Toll shall be charged from vehicles with non-affixed FASTag on the front windshield.
Deliberate non-affixation of FASTag on the windscreen leads to unnecessary delays at the toll plazas causing inconvenience to fellow National Highway users
Progress on FASTag
There has been considerable progress in FASTag since it was introduced. As of July 2020, FASTag transactions crossed 86 million while over 18 million tags have been issued across the nation. Since it will be compulsory for all vehicles to have a FASTag from January 2021, this figure will only go up in the months to come. FASTag is active along 615 toll plazas of NHAI and at 100 state highway toll plazas across the country.
